An increasing number of consumers may be choosing pieces of statement platinum jewellery that reflect their personality.

According to Rosanagh Wilson, stylist and image consultant at Onvu, people are opting to wear fewer pieces of jewellery, but ones that reflect their style.

She claims consumers are being more careful when picking jewellery and are using these accessories to reflect their personalities instead of their clothes.

"People are enjoying jewellery and choosing it quite carefully because it's a reflection of their taste," she said.

"Some people will go for something that's really big and showy because they're really flamboyant, while other people will use slightly more classic pieces."

Platinum jewellery may be a good option for a number of people because of its durability.

This is because Ms Wilson also noted consumers are thinking about how long a piece will last when choosing jewellery.

She said: "They're thinking of the longevity when they buy a piece of jewellery to update their look."

Michael O'Connor reveals his top celebrity platinum engagement rings

Jewellery expert Michael O'Connor has revealed his three favorite celebrity platinum engagement rings.

He has picked out Penelope Cruz's platinum engagement ring with blue sapphire, Natalie Portman's eco-friendly platinum ring that has a vintage centre diamond and finally, Elizabeth Taylor's unofficial platinum engagement ring given to her by Richard Burton.

Speaking about why celebrities go for platinum, O'Connor said: "Celebrities are known for having large diamond engagement rings, so they typically choose a platinum setting, to ensure it will be held securely.

"Platinum not only puts the diamond on display more securely, its natural color never fades, making it the perfect symbol for an enduring love."

Taylor's platinum ring featured a 33.19 carat Krupp diamond. In 1968, Burton paid $305,000 for the ring.

O'Connor explained that he is still "obsessed" with this ring because of its "intricate yet classic design".

He added that it is the inspiration behind many celebrity engagement rings that appear today.

Retailers may well have found that vintage platinum engagement rings and wedding bands are increasing in popularity, as there has been more demand from brides for this style of ring.

Helen Webster, editor of Perfect Wedding magazine, explained some of the big trends emerging within the bridal jewellery market.

"Brides are very much going for jewellery with sentimental meaning; so they are either wearing something borrowed, so a piece of vintage jewellery from the family, or they [are] going for something that has got vintage elements," she said.

In terms of other pieces of bridal jewellery, Ms Webster also noted that tiaras have become more fashionable following the two royal weddings, during which both Catherine Middleton and Zara Phillips wore tiaras.

She said: "I think we will start to see more tiaras and also tiaras do lend themselves to a more classic, simple veil which again both Catherine and Zara chose."

When it comes to engagement rings, more women are going for coloured gem stones, a trend partially led by the Duchess of Cambridge.

A limited edition platinum watch was created to mark the 130th anniversary of watch manufacturer Seiko.

Earlier this year, the company announced it would be making 130 platinum versions of the anniversary watches.

According to Retail Jeweler, the brand has also launched a special website to mark its turning 130. The website, Seikowatches.com/130th, regales landmarks from the company's history, such as its 1881 beginnings and its involvement in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, the news provider reports.

In a company message, Shinji Hattori, president and chief executive officer, spoke about the 130th anniversary celebrations.

He said: "I choose to believe that Kintaro Hattori (the company founder) would be proud and delighted to see the collection that we have created in celebration of his achievements."

Sell gold and buy platinum, expert suggests

Platinum jewellery could be a particularly profitable investment at the moment as one expert has said now is a good time to buy the precious metal.

Tom Aspray, writing for the Forbes blog, said that it is a good time to sell gold and buy platinum.

He explained that the rarity of platinum, along with its industrial uses, means there are a number of opportunities for investors, who should "consider lightening up on gold in favour of select, liquid entities that track platinum".

Mr Aspray wrote: "The greater rarity of platinum and its extensive industrial demand are in clear contrast to this year's lagging price action relative to gold. Historically, this spread will eventually widen out, which will provide some interesting investing opportunities."

He noted that platinum is around 16 times rarer than gold and that it is used in industry because, unlike gold, it is resistant to corrosion.

Poonam Soni, a jewelleer based in Mumbai, recently explained that platinum is a popular choice for eternity rings because it is durable and does not get damaged easily, reports livemint.com.

Zara Philips weds with platinum wedding bands

Zara Philips, the daughter of Princess Anne, has exchanged platinum wedding bands with her long-term boyfriend Mike Tindall.

The couple married in a ceremony at Canongate Kirk in Edinburgh on July 30th with platinum wedding bands bought by the groom, reports the Daily Mail.

Her wedding band matched the platinum engagement ring given to her by the England rugby star in December last year.

A royal source revealed that after the ceremony, the wedding turned into a "family knees-up", quite set apart from the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton held earlier this year.

They told the news provider: "It was just a family knees-up. Your archetypal wedding, really. Except with a lot of royals and rugby players. And a lot of drinking. In fact make that a hell of a lot of drinking."

Another royal source revealed that Tindall's speech was fairly emotional, focusing on the groom's devotion to his new bride.

"For a tough nut he is actually quite soppy when it comes to her," they are quoted as saying.

Poonam Soni, a jeweller based in Mumbai, told livemint.com that eternity rings denote love that is everlasting.

Nick Lachey has married his girlfriend of five years Vanessa Minnillo with a set of platinum wedding bands.

The former 98 Degrees star exchanged vows with Minnillo, an actress and model, in a private ceremony on Sir Richard Branson's private Necker Island in the British Virgin Islands.

A platinum bracelet is due to be put on show as part of a new exhibition in Connecticut that documents the history of jewellery.

Bijoux: The Origins and Impact of Jewelry will open at the Bruce Museum in Greenwich on July 16th and will run until March 11th next year.

The exhibition will explore the wide range of materials used to make jewellery over the course of history.

One piece on show is a platinum, yellow sapphire and diamond bracelet created by Oscar Heyman & Brothers.

A statement from the museum said: "Bijoux explores the ingenuity of artists to create adornment from a host of materials, from the common to the sublime.

"It delves into the genesis of these natural materials and explores the economic and environmental impact of our universal attraction to sparkle. Bijoux is a celebration of human nature and our ability to adapt."

The Bruce Museum was originally built in 1853 as a private home for Francis Lister Hawks, a lawyer, clergyman and historian.

Jewelry Information Center (JIC), the consumer education arm of Jewelers of America, launched its Ultimate Proposal Contest to find the nation's best proposal story.
Austin Dias won for his 'Setting Sail' tale, which involved popping the question to his girlfriend using the sail of his boat while she stood on shore.

As well as receiving the platinum rings, the couple, who were selected from more than 6,000 entries, also won a seven-night Caribbean cruise.

The auction house has arranged a series of exhibitions and auctions for later this year devoted to the Oscar-winning actress's collection.

It is confident that the sale of her collection of jewellery will be remembered as one of the most remarkable events in auction history, with a gala evening sale of her most famous pieces due to take place on December 13th.

A jewellery designer has spoken about how platinum jewellery is better than gold when it comes to special occasions.

Ritika Sadhwani, a designer who works with platinum for many pieces in her collections, spoke to Daily News & Analysis India about the precious metal.

She was asked if diamonds and platinum are meant to be used for all occasions.
"When anyone celebrates occasions like anniversaries, weddings, birthdays … they love to gift their loved ones something that is worthy of their love and commitment. Hence, people opt for diamonds."

Platinum ring to feature on Antiques Roadshow

A platinum ring is due to feature on BBC show Antiques Roadshow later this year.

Crowds turned up to Lulworth Castle in Dorset (UK) to see the show being filmed, with many taking along precious items to be looked at by experts, reports the Bournemouth Echo.

Sarah Ward, from Blandford, took along a platinum ring and was pleasantly surprised when the expert valued it at £8,000 ($13,100).

She told the news provider: "I bought it for myself 20 years ago for a fraction of that price."

"I purchased the ring during a particularly difficult period in my life, so it means a lot to me. It was a treat when perhaps I could ill afford it but everything has worked out all right in the end."

The platinum ring will feature on the 34th series of the show.

The ring is from Lane's archival collection and has a five carat diamond that is set in platinum. It also has strips of black onyx along the sides.
