Platinum watch created to mark space travel anniversary

A platinum watch has been created to mark the 50th anniversary of the first man to travel into space.

April 12th marked 50 years since Russian astronaut Yuri Gagarin travelled into space.
To celebrate, Bernhard Lederer has created a limited edition platinum watch named the Gagarin Tourbillon.

Only 50 units of the watch have been made. The time piece features a flying orbital tourbillon that rotates anticlockwise around the dial counter.

The orbital tourbillon goes around the dial counter in 108 minutes, which is the amount of time that Gagarin spent in orbit around the Earth.

He was one of 20 pilots considered for the role. In 1960, an Air Force doctor evaluated his personality.

"Distinguishes himself from his colleagues by his sharp and far-ranging sense of attention to his surroundings; a well-developed imagination; quick reactions; persevering, prepares himself painstakingly for his activities and training exercises," he wrote.

Yuri Gagarin was born in 1934. After orbiting the Earth in 1961, he became an international celebrity and was recognized with a number of medals and honours.
