Happy couples who missed out on platinum engagement rings when they originally declared their love for each other could still go for the precious metal.
In an article for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, JoAnne Klimovich Harrop looks at how many people are now choosing to upgrade their original engagement rings either because they have more financial security or because of changing styles.
Because of the sentimentality attached to engagement rings, she notes that couples often choose to keep elements of their old rings in new ones, such as diamonds or gems.
Rob Hallett, owner of Robert Hallett Goldsmith in Oakmont, told the news provider: "Just like fashion changes, so does our business in terms of what is popular - and platinum is very popular.
"We do whatever the customer wants, because we are in the business to make people happy."
One reason why many may opt to upgrade to a platinum engagement ring is the increasing sight of celebrities wearing the precious metal.
For example, actress Eva Mendes recently wore two platinum and diamond bracelets and a grey Tahitian pearl ring set in platinum to the premiere of 'The Other Guys'.
